A Safe Scouting Environment is Priority #1

The BSA requires Leaders and Volunteers to take Youth Protection Training.

Sometimes, trying to manage a group of boys is like "hearding cats".  Parents are encouraged to step in and correct behavior of the boys, as well as bring issues up to the leadership immediately.

In addition, BSA has numerous safety requirements focused on a developmental scale built into each age group.  To summarize a few rules:

  • Sleeping overnight has a set of rules
  • Only Bears and Webelos may earn the Whittling Chip..the ability to use a pocket knife
  • Archery must be done at an official BSA Camp with certified instructors
  • Swimming must be supervised by a leader who is certified in Safe Swimming Defense and CPR qualified person on hand
  • Boating must be supervised by a leader who has taken the BSA safe boating/afloat training

Leader Training

Youth Protection Training
for Leaders, Volunteers, and open to Parents if you chose:  Effective June 1, 2012, Youth Protection Training is required for all BSA registered volunteers, regardless of their position.  New Leaders are required to take the Youth Protection Training before submitting an application for registration.  The certificate of completion must be submitted at the time the application is made AND before volunteer service with youth begins.  Youth Protection Training must be taken every two years.  These rules of safety focus on "two adult person" safety, meaning at all times, there must be two adults supervising the individual scout or scouts.

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) Course:  This is a one day training event which focuses on how to plan and execute a safe and fun event, especially camping.  At a minimum, 1 adult leader must be certified to apply for tour permits.  Pack 55 currently has the Cubmaster, Treasurer, and Chairman certified for 2012-2013.

Outdoor Webelos Leader Skills Training (OWLS) Course:  Since the Webelos start becoming more independent and active outdoors, this is an overnight course for the Webelos Den Leaders.  Pack 55 has 2 Den Leaders certified for 2012-2013.

Scout Leaders Fully Trained:  For the Pack 55 Leaders to be considered fully trained and wear the trained patch, they must have completed (4) online course:  This is Scouting, Youth Protection Training, Fast Start Training for the Leader Position, and Leader Specific Training for their position.  There are also additional courses online and classroom taught by the Council or BSA for swimming, boating, outdoor safety, etc.
